Having received a very interesting call myself, with some fascinating history of the call (read up on the history of N2DAN at my QRZ.com page, https://www.qrz.com/db/N2DAN), I’ve become curious about those that came before us.
Here’s what we know about Robert W. Day - he became a silent key at aged 80, and would have turned 100 in August of 2026.
Mr. Day was born in Pickens County, a son of the late John Ellis and Martha "Mattie" Brown Day. He was retired from Pickens County after forty years of service. He was the First County Administrator for Pickens County, serving for 32 years, from September 1957 until June 1989. On May 25, 2006 he was awarded the title of County Administrator Emeritus. He was the first paid Fire Chief for the City of Pickens and was a volunteer fireman for many years. He was a former Civil Defense Director. He attended East Pickens Baptist Church, and was a member of the Morning Sunday School Class, the American Legion, and was a veteran of the US Navy, serving during World War II, on the LST #803, and served in all major battles in the South Pacific. He was an active amateur radio operator for over 56 years.
